Hickory Grove Folk Art Painting

I listed this new 9 inch x 12 inch painting on eBay this evening. This one was inspired by Tracey over at one of my favorite blogs, Notes From a Cottage Industry . She makes the most beautiful cupcakes ever. You must check out her archives to see all the creative cupcakes and decorating ideas. So, the little cupcake shop in this painting is dedicated to her new "cupcake" business.

This morning is the grand opening for Myra's Cottage Cupcakes. Her friend Vivian who owns her own salon, Clip 'n Curl, encouraged her to open her own shop after savoring her cupcake creations. Myra offers cupcakes in all shapes and sizes for all occasions. Vivian thinks that her dearest friend's talent will be a huge success in Hickory Grove!

  5. Hi Katherine,
I'm glad our quaint names amuse you. We do have some doozies!

A bit about the legend of Pickles Gap, where I live, it got its name from a German immigrant who was crossing the creek, his wagon over turned, spilling all his pickle barrel contents.

As far as Toad Suck goes, according to local folklore, long ago when steamboats plied the Arkansas River and the water wasn't the correct depth, the captains and their crew docked where the Toad Suck Lock and Dam now spans the river to wait until the water level rose. While waiting, they occupied themselves at the local tavern there, to the displeasure of the locals who lived nearby. The residents described the sailors this way: "They suck on the bottle 'til they swell up like toads." Hence the name Toad Suck. The tavern is long gone, but the legend lives on. We even have festival named after it, go figure!

Now those would make some mighty interesting paintings :-)
