Engagement and Garden Photos

I'm sorry to gush over these photos like this...but aren't these two adorable!
Here they are enjoying their favorite pastime, reading and knitting.

This sign has been hanging in my garden for years and has weathered dreadfully. Notice, however, that the angels faces are in great condition. You can click on the photo to enlarge it.

Could someone please tell me what the bush on the left is? I have looked in several gardening books and I don't believe it's a butterfly bush. You can click on it to enlarge. This was in my garden when we moved here and I moved it from the shady back yard to the side yard where there is lots of sun. It's much happier there. I thought it might be a veronica, but it's nearly 6 feet tall (same height as the fence).

Thanks to everyone for your well wishes to Amber and Scott. I wish I had the time to write each and everyone of you but this is a very hectic and exciting week. I'll do my best to visit each of you next week after the wedding.

  4. Beautiful photos, Cathie! What an adorable couple. Congratulations on the wedding! I can't wait to hear all about it. You must be such a proud momma.

I think that the plant in the photo is a Hollyhock. They can grow to be quite tall and they are also used to create medications for diabetics. I absolutely adore them because they tend to attract Hummingbirds.

  6. You must be very proud of those two, Catherine, and very rightly so!

Not too sure about the plant? I have a butterfly bush and it looks quite different - much taller and gigger leaves. It looks very much like a Salvia to me(I have one of those too!) If I can think of another one, I'll let you know, lol.

  8. That plant is actually Purple Loosestrife. Google it. I know here in Michigan it is considered a nuisance plant that takes over wetland areas and is no longer available for purchase here in Michigan. However, seeds do travel here and there. I have had it in my yard one season and it never came back. Following is some info on it:

Purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) is a hardy perennial that arrived in North America from Europe sometime during the 1800s. Each July through September, wetlands across New York State are washed in its beautiful color, which is probably this particular plant's only attribute. Because loosestrife has no natural enemies on this side of the Atlantic Ocean, it tends to overtake and become the principal plant in wetlands. As a result, the diversity and density of native vegetation decreases. Combine this with the fact that native wildlife rarely use the plant or its seeds, and you have a real life nuisance plant on your hands. \

  9. Cute engagement photos!

I have a purple salvia (sage), much like your pink - only not as tall. I'd call yours a salvia, though I am having a hard time pinning down the variety (apparently there are over 600)!

You could post your photo for exact identification at the gardenweb: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/salvia/

  11. Oh yes! They are a very cute couple. All the best to them and everyone as you prepare for this happy event. I wish I could tell you what the bush is...no clue, but it appears that you have a definitive answer. Yay for Commenters!

  12. Cathi-I have to agree with Linda it looks like Purple Loosestrife. It is very invasive and banned like she said in many states for purchase. Butterfly bushes usually grow not so straight up. Love the engagement pics!!

  14. Hi, your bush is Lythrum, probably a sterile version since it doesn't spread. The non-sterile version grows and clogs rivers and streams (according to my nurseryman, who was the groundsperson for our University of Tennessee at Martin) He has a lovely home where he now has a perennial nursery since he retired from the university. I have several of these, I've posted pictures of them, they didn't do as well this year as they usually do.
